Squeezing sandwiches, or how to tune useful properties of magnetic multilayers with pressure

Event details

I will give a brief introduction into the physics of magnetoresistance and related phenomena, illustrated by several examples of layered manganese oxides. I will aim to explain how chemical and hydrostatic pressure can be used in order to modify magnetic interactions and electronic structure. Relevant experimental methods and theoretical techniques will also be considered. Promise to keep it all simple.

This is a weekly series of informal talks given primarily by members of the soft condensed matter and statistical mechanics groups, but is also open to members of other groups and external visitors. The aim of the series is to promote discussion and learning of various topics at a level suitable to the broad background of the group. Everyone is welcome to attend..
