Congratulations to PhD student for nomination in the Student Awards ceremony 2021

Estifa’a Zaid was shortlisted for the ‘Commitment to Student Experience’ category which recognises those who put in extra steps to ensure that students feel connected to their academic or social community.

During her time as PhD student, Estifa'a has contributed to the School as a Class Representative, Teaching Assistant, at the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee’s BAME student focus group, and as Student Representative at the College of Science and Engineering Research and Training Committee.

Feedback in support of her nomination included:

She was undeniably one of the best Teaching Assistants I've had at this uni; she made sure all students were helped and really took the time to ensure we understood the concepts.

She started the School’s BAME Network. This group is particularly valuable during the pandemic, as we all feel disconnected from our School. Estifa'a has made it a priority to host these meetings and regularly check in on members. She is incredibly kind and empathetic, and the School is a much better place for BAME students because of her.

Estifa’a commented:

As a former undergraduate and current PhD student, Edinburgh University and the School have been a huge part of my journey and development. I know first-hand some of the struggles experienced by BAME students and am passionate about providing the spaces I wish I had had during my time as an undergraduate.

Congratulations to all the individuals and groups who successfully achieved an award at the 2021 Student Awards ceremony.
