Biographical Statement

Simon Bates was appointed to a lectureship in Edinburgh in 2000. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2003, and a Personal Chair in Physics Education in 2008. Between 2006-09 he was Director of Teaching in the School. In 2006 he was awarded the Chancellor's Award for Teaching.

From August 2010, he is seconded half-time to the College of Science and Engineering where he is Dean of Learning and Teaching. Simon is also a member of the Institute of Physics Higher Education Group committee, and the Institute of Physics Education Board.

Research Interests

Research interests encompass three main areas:

  • Atomistic simulation of liquid mixtures and solid materials, within the Institute for Condensed Matter and Complex Systems. More details are available on the ICMCS site and my own web page.
  • Physics Education Research, as a member of EdPER, the Edinburgh Physics Education Research Group. More details are available on the EdPER microsite.

In the academic year 2010-11, I have a reduced teaching load while Dean of Learning and Teaching.
