Tailoring your degree

Single and Joint degrees

The School of Physics & Astronomy offers both single honours and joint honours degrees, allowing you to tailor your course to suit your needs:

  • Single Honours fully concentrates on a specific area of Physics
  • Joint Honours covers equally two areas of study from two different Schools.

Wide-ranging learning

During your Pre-Honours years (First and Second years), you can choose up to a third of the course content from a wide assortment of subjects (http://www.star.euclid.ed.ac.uk/ipp/drps_phy.htm ). For example - timetable allowing - you could learn a new language, find out more about Chemistry or follow a Biology course.

And the choices don't end there. From Third Year (Junior Honours) onwards, you can study and familiarise yourself with a wide range of Physics courses taught by staff involved in world-class and pioneering research.

Study abroad

If you would like to gain the experience of studying abroad for 6 months or a full year, the University of Edinburgh can offer you several options. After your First and Second years (Pre-Honours) - and if it will not be detrimental to your academic studies - you can apply to study abroad through either an Erasmus or a USA/Canada exchange.
