How to get to St. Martin's, Ambleside

The aim of the School is to teach material underpinning research in modern condensed matter theoretical physics, introducing concepts, techniques and problems that are the subject of current research in the field, illustrated with a wide range of applications. The School is directed towards postgraduate students in condensed matter theory, and theory-inclined students in experimental condensed matter physics, typically in their first or second year of research. The lecture courses will be presented by active members of the community, and accompanied by example classes with full tutorial support. A series of specialist seminars will highlight current research and applications.

This is the seventh in a successful series, following previous schools held in Ambleside (1997-1998 and 2000-2002) and Harlech (1999). The latest EPSRC/IOP Theory of Condensed Matter Summer School will again be held at The University College of St Martin, Ambleside, between 31 August and 12 September 2003. Ambleside is in Cumbria, on the shores of Lake Windermere, in the heart of the beautiful Lake District National Park.

The School is organized by the UK Institute of Physics Theory of Condensed Matter Group, and sponsored by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, who will pay the cost of the School, accommodation and meals for students holding EPSRC studentships. Such students need only claim the cost of travel to and from the school from their Departments. The cost for non-EPSRC students is £750 (£800 for single study bedroom), including meals and accommodation. For UK based non-EPSRC funded students a limited number of bursaries (which cover some of the fee) are generously provided by the Theory Group of the Institute of Physics. To apply please attach to your application form a statement of how your PhD is funded and how much your department could contribute, signed by your supervisor. Please note that students from institutions outside the UK are not eligible for an IoP bursary.
