Our locations

The School of Physics and Astronomy is housed in two locations in Edinburgh:

Both are situated close to each other, about 2 miles south of Edinburgh city centre.

How to get to us

From Edinburgh Airport

Edinburgh Airport (EDI) lies to the north-west of the city and is served by a large range of domestic and international carriers. 

Taxi

A journey to JCMB or ROE takes about 20–30 minutes (longer at peak times) and will cost around £30.

Tram

A tram service connects Edinburgh Airport with the city centre, running at least every 10 minutes from early morning until late night. Get off at Princes Street and then catch 9 bus on Hanover Street direct to King's Buildings campus or ROE, see below for more details. 

Two alternative tram connections avoiding the city centre - get off the tram at Balgreen and take bus 38 to West Mains Road or ROE, or get off the tram at Haymarket and take bus 12 to Mayfield Road.

Bus

Airlink 100 runs from the airport terminal to the city centre. This is a limited-stop express bus running every 10 minutes, 24 hours per day. Get off the bus at the final stop then walk to Hanover Street and take bus route 9 direct to King's Building campus or ROE, see below for more details.

Edinburgh's principal railway station, Edinburgh Waverley (EDB), is well placed on the UK rail network and is served by a number of rail operators. It is conveniently located in the heart of the city.

Taxi

The taxi rank is on Market Street, follow signs in station.  A black cab will cost around £12-£15 and should take around 15 minutes, depending on traffic.

Bus from the city centre

There are a number of Lothian Buses bus services from the city centre to the King's Buildings campus, where JCMB is located. ROE is then a short walk from JCMB. Tickets cost £2 you can pay by contactless payment (e.g. bank card, Apple or Google pay) or cash (no change given).

Service 9: The most direct bus from the city centre is service 9, which you can take from Hanover Street (close to Princes Street tram stop & Waverley train station) or Broughton Street (close to Picardy Place tram stop). This bus runs approximately every 20 minutes during the day and has a stop near ROE before terminating on the King’s Building campus.  This service also passes Buccleuch Street, where the George Square central campus is located.

Service 12: Departs from Haymarket (close to Haymarket tram stop) and also Lothian Road (West End of Princes Street) and stops close to King's Building campus on Mayfield Road.

Service 24: Departs from Lothian Road (west end of Princes Street) and stops close to King's Building campus on Mayfield Road and at Blackford Road for ROE.

Many bus routes pass Cameron Toll (3, 7, 8, 29, 31, 37, 47, 49) which is a 10-minute walk away from King's Buildings; 20-minutes from ROE.

Service 38: Connects the ROE and King's Buildings (stops on West Mains Road) with Morningside, Gorgie  and the Balgreen tram stop (providing a convenient connection to Edinburgh airport that avoids the city centre).
