SUMMARY:Maths to mission: from Investment Banking via AI to climate tech
DESCRIPTION:ZeroAvia is a clean aviation and defence leader focusing on de
veloping of hydrogen-electric engines for commercial aircraft and electric
propulsion component technologies for novel transport applications. Georg
y Egorov\, the CFO of the company\, will talk about his career journey spa
nning more than 25 years and how his degree in math led him first to a car
eer in investment banking\, and subsequently in AI and climate tech. Joine
d by ZeroAvia’s senior fuel cell engineer Daniela Agachi\, they will als
o talk about technical challenges facing ZeroAvia and career opportunities
in the company. \n\nStudents and staff from across the College of Scienc
e and Engineering and wider University are welcome to attend. After Georgy
's talk\, there will be time for networking over some refreshments.\n\nAbo
ut ZeroAvia\n\nZeroAvia is leading the transition to a clean future of fli
ght by developing electric propulsion technologies for aviation to unlock
lower costs and emissions\, cleaner air\, reduced noise\, energy independe
nce and increased connectivity. The company is developing hydrogen-electri
c (fuel cell-powered) engines for existing commercial aircraft segments an
d also supplying hydrogen and electric propulsion component technologies f
or novel electric air transport applications (including battery\, hybrid a
nd fuel cell powered electric fixed-wing aircraft\, novel eVTOL designs\,
rotorcraft and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles). ZeroAvia has submitted its first
full engine for up to 20-seat planes for certification and is working on
a larger powertrain for 40–80-seat aircraft\, with significant flight te
st and regulatory milestones achieved with the U.S. FAA and UK CAA.\n\nAbo
ut Georgy\n\nGeorgy Egorov is Chief Financial Officer of ZeroAvia\, a comp
any developing the first practical hydrogen-electric\, zero-emission aviat
ion solution. He has got more than 25 years of finance\, strategy\, and ca
pital markets experience as well as extensive knowledge of investor relati
ons and corporate development. Before ZeroAvia\, Georgy was CFO of Barinth
us\, a company that co-invented the Oxford AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine an
d which he helped take public on Nasdaq in 2021. Prior to that\, Georgy wa
s the CFO of Exscientia\, one of the global leaders in AI / machine learni
ng\, which also went public on Nasdaq. Prior to his CFO career\, he spent
17 years in investment banking\, including Goldman Sachs and UBS\, during
which period he led more than 50 IPOs\, helped raise more than $100bn of e
quity and debt capital for companies around the world and was involved in
numerous M&A transactions. He started his professional career in PwC. Geor
gy is a graduate of the University of Cambridge.\n\nSpeaker:\n* Georgy Ego

SUMMARY:Navigating a Career in Industrial Research & Development
DESCRIPTION:Prof. David Moore will be giving an R&D Career Masterclass aim
ed at students and post-docs considering a career in industrial science\n\
nDavid joined SoPA as Chair of Formulation Science in 2024 following a 30-
year career in various research and development (R&D) and innovation roles
in the specialty chemical\, fast moving consumer goods (FMCG)\, over the
counter (OTC) consumer healthcare\, and pharmaceutical sectors. A native o
f Edinburgh\, David completed his PhD in biophysical chemistry in the US a
fter which he worked in the US and UK leading global R&D teams with labora
tories in the US\, UK\, and China. These teams consisted of scientists wit
 h backgrounds in Physics\, Chemistry\, Biology\, Pharmacy\, Medicine and E
 ngineering.\n\nPrimarily geared at students\, post-doctoral fellows and t
hose considering industrial scientific careers\, David’s presentation wi
ll share his career path and discuss his experiences in various industries
and technical roles\, as well as the challenges and opportunities working
for large multinational companies and small privately held companies. Th
e intention is to set the stage for questions and discussion with students
and post-docs who are considering industrial R&D roles when they leave un
iversity.\n\nSpeaker:\n* Professor David Moore (School of Physics & Astron
 omy\, University of Edinburgh)

SUMMARY:Blackford Analysis: A Founder's Journey
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Ben Panter\, former UoE astronomer turned medical imaging
entrepreneur\, will describe his experiences leading Blackford Analysis fo
r over fifteen years\, from initial research at the University through the
spinout process\, establishing product-market fit and then scaling to the
point of acquisition by Bayer\, a multinational pharmaceuticals business.
Alongside the story Ben will highlight areas that are useful for academic
s to consider as they contemplate commercialisation of their research: the
mechanics of working with investors\, understanding the difference betwee
n product and tech and establishing and maintaining company culture.\n\nSp

SUMMARY:Navigating Uncertainty: Finding a path in a changing world
DESCRIPTION:In 2026\, rapid technological change\, ecological disruption\,
and institutional lag have made uncertainty a shared and unavoidable cond
ition of modern life. This masterclass explores not entrepreneurship as a
career label\, but the deeper essence of the entrepreneurial journey: lear
ning to navigate uncertainty when established paths\, roles\, and maps no
longer hold. Drawing on insights from science\, design\, social theory\, a
nd real-world practice\, the session examines why navigating uncertainty i
s becoming an inevitable challenge for all of us and how meaningful direct
ions and paths can emerge through action rather than pre-existing plans.\n
 \n\n\nAbout Tattva and Prantar:\n\nTattva have developed a biotechnology p
latform that leverages systems biology and cellular intelligence of cyanob
acteria to create carbon-negative engineered living materials. Prantar is
an interdisciplinary scientist and a PhD scholar at the Advanced Centre fo
r Biochemical Engineering\, University College London\, where his research
focused on native phenotypic programming\, solid-state photobioreactor en
gineering\, and the bioprocess scaling of living material for industrial a
pplications. He is the recipient of the Manton Prize 2020 from the British
Phycological Society for the invention of a novel solid-state cyanobacter
ial biomanufacturing technique. Prior to bioengineering\, he worked for ov
er a decade as a professional architect designing large-scale\, ecological
ly regenerative infrastructure. His trajectory spans systems biology\, bio
process engineering\, and sustainable construction.\n\nSpeaker:\n* Prantar
