SUMMARY:What role does nuclear power play in a Net Zero Energy System?
DESCRIPTION:What role does nuclear power play in a Net Zero Energy System?
\n The ups and downs of a career in the nuclear sector\n\n\n\nDr Dame Sue
Ion (GBE\, FREng\, FRS\, FIoM3\, FNucI) is Hon President of the National N
uclear Skills Academy and is a member of the UK Nuclear Regulator’s Inde
pendent Advisory Panel as well as holding a number of other advisory roles
. Dame Sue spent over 3 decades in the nuclear sector before moving to a m
ore advisory role on energy matters generally. She was the UK’s represen
tative at the IAEA and was the only non US member of the US Dept of Energy
Nuclear Advisory Committee. She chaired the Nuclear Innovation Advisory B
oard for the UK Government and holds visiting professorships at Manchester
and Imperial College. She is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering
and the Royal Society and chairs or serves on a number of standing commit
tees including Diversity and Ethics Committees. Sue is passionate about at
tracting more females into science and engineering\, regularly gives talks
in schools and has in the past appeared in the media to discuss how impor
tant this is.\n\nSue will describe her early career and the wide diversity
of roles held since graduating and the amazing opportunities given to eng
age with top scientists and engineers internationally. She will then go on
to talk about the challenges in trying to achieve net zero and why nuclea
r power is on the cusp of a renaissance.\n\nAfter Sue's talk\, we will hav
e a fireside chat with Sue and Jake Jurewicz (CEO and co-founder of Blue E
nergy)\, chaired by Professor Neil Turok (Higgs Chair of Theoretical Physi
cs)\, that will explore the evolution and application of nuclear technolog
 y.\n\nSpeaker:\n* Dr Dame Sue Ion

SUMMARY:Reflections on a 20-year pseudo-random walk among ivory towers and
  startups
DESCRIPTION:Confessions of a wanderer: reflections on a 20-year-long pseud
o-random walk among ivory towers and startup trenches\n\nIn this talk I wi
ll explore my journey between academic research and entrepreneurial ventur
es. Drawing from personal experience\, I'll discuss how scientific discove
ry can lead to unexpected commercial opportunities\, the challenges of tra
nslating academic work into business value\, and my best take on strategie
s for navigating both worlds effectively. I'll share key decision points\,
lessons learnt\, and practical frameworks for researchers considering ent
repreneurial paths. I will aim to provide insights for colleagues interest
ed in commercialisation as well as entrepreneurs looking to leverage acade
mic research to innovate.\n\nFilippo Menolascina holds the Chair of Engine
ering Biology at the University of Edinburgh. An Electrical Engineer and C
omputer Scientist by training (BSc ’06\, MSc ’08)\, Prof Menolascina o
btained his PhD in 2011 by defending a thesis that provided the first demo
nstration of in vivo real-time control of a complex synthetic gene network
. His doctoral work pioneered the field now known as cybergenetics. As a p
ostdoc at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Prof Menolascina exten
ded these results to the control of complex traits emerging from biomolecu
lar networks\, providing the first demonstration of real-time control of a
erotaxis in B. subtilis. He now leads the University of Edinburgh’s cSyn
BioSys group which combines in silico methods and in vivo experiments to p
ursue two complementary goals: elucidating the design principles of living
systems -i.e. understanding the instruction-set of life\, and using these
primitives to re-program cells. The overarching goal of the cSynBioSys gr
oup is to develop a Model-Based Biosystem Engineering framework for Engine
ering Biology\, i.e. a model-based approach to automating the design of sy
nthetic circuits that aims to make engineered cells as easy to build and p
rogram as computers are today.\n\nSpeaker:\n* Dr Filippo Menolascina (Scho
 ol of Engineering)

SUMMARY:Growing fungi proteins in beer fermenters to replace chicken
DESCRIPTION:Zac is Co-Founder & CEO of Pacifico Biolabs. He started his ca
reer at McKinsey in London as a consultant working across a range of indus
tries. In 2020 he joined the British Government’s Covid Task Force as As
sistant Director in the Cabinet Office\, focusing on National Healthcare.
In 2021 he moved to Berlin to join Razor Group\, a tech startup\, as Head
of Special Projects.\n\nHe co-founded Pacifico Biolabs in 2022\, with the
vision to create alternative protein products as a commercially viable alt
ernative to fish and meat from mycelium fungi proteins. Building on many o
f the learnings from earlier movers in both the plant-based and fermentati
on space\, Pacifico have developed technology to create realistic whole-mu
scle textures through mycelium fermentation\, utilising agri-food sidestre
ams\, with a highly-scalable process. The company have already won a numbe
r of awards including Givaudan’s Future of Taste Award\, and EIT (Europe
an Institute of Technology) Food’s Net Zero Food System Award in 2023. A
fter closing their $3.3M Pre-Seed Round in 2024\, Pacifico are now focused
on bringing commercial production online and launching products in the Ge
rman\, Austrian\, and Swiss markets.\n\nJoin us to hear from Zac about his
entrepreneurial journey to date\, how mycelium is being used by innovator
 s\, Pacifico’s novel technology\, and the company's commercial strategy
and rationale. He will also touch upon the importance of building the righ
t team and fundraising from venture capitalists.\n\nSpeaker:\n* Zac Austin

veloping of hydrogen-electric engines for commercial aircraft and electric
propulsion component technologies for novel transport applications. Georg
y Egorov\, the CFO of the company\, will talk about his career journey spa
nning more than 25 years and how his degree in math led him first to a car
eer in investment banking\, and subsequently in AI and climate tech. Joine
