The Council was created on April 1, 2007 and is responsible for fundamental research in particle physics, nuclear physics, astronomy, and space, for the major UK facilities for the physical and life sciences (synchrotrons, light sources, lasers, and neutrons), national laboratories (at RAL, Daresbury, and UKATC) and international science projects (CERN, ESO, ESA, ILL, and ESRF). It has over 2000 staff and an annual budget of over £700M.
I will explain how STFC is developing its science and technology strategy: what are the goals of the council and how we can set priorities between very different projects, the role of the Science Board, the various Science Committees, and our in-house experts; identification of a set of key technologies, and interactions with the Technology Strategy Board, which facilities STFC is putting forward in the RCUK Large Facilities Roadmap, and the potential for funding some of these projects through the Large Facilities Capital Fund.
I will also explain the opportunities for research community and staff input into the large facilities roadmap and the broader strategy.
