Event details

Why is it taking so long to have equality between men and women in higher education?

Men occupy the top jobs, continue to enjoy much higher salaries and women still find it harder to get promoted. The talk will explore why this has happened and what to do about it. It will also show that, with a small amount of determination and understanding, much progress can be made.

Chemistry at York is the only UK department to hold an Athena Swan Gold award. All SUPA Physics departments are engaged either in the Athena Swan Charter or in the corresponding IoP Juno scheme. The Athena Swan Charter 'recognises and celebrates good employment practice for women working in science, engineering and technology (SET) in higher education and research'. The Athena SWAN program helps to identify best practice for the working environment of all staff, not just for women, working in science disciplines.

The talk will last for approximately 50 minutes, and will be followed by a discussion.
