Abstract:
The LIGO experiment has recently reported the first direct observation of gravitational waves, in a spectacular event where two black holes of 36 and 29 solar masses coalesce, liberating in a few milliseconds in gravitational waves the energy corresponding to about 3 solar masses. We will discuss, in a colloquium style, the significance of this result and the history of the experimental and theoretical breakthroughs that have made it possible.
