Explicit and spontaneous breaking of SU(3) into its finite subgroups

Event details

We will show how explicit and spontaneous breaking are related (one-to-one). Explicit breaking is formalised through invariants. The latter divide into primary and secondary types. We will discuss how invariants can be found systematically from the Molien functions. We further discuss the necessary and sufficient criteria for breaking into a group where the latter is the non-trivial matter. All these concepts, though general, will be discussed in the context of finite SU(3) subgroups.

About Particle Physics Theory seminars

The Particle Physics Theory seminar is a weekly series of talks reflecting the diverse interests of the group. Topics include analytic and numerical calculations based on the Standard Model of elementary particle physics, theories exploring new physics, as well as more formal developments in gauge theories and gravity..
