  • Location: Room 2511,

Event details

The behaviour of caesium under pressure has been intimately linked to the change in character of the electrons in its lowest energy conduction band from s-like to d-like. One of the resulting effects is an iso-structural phase change (fcc -> fcc) at 4.2 GPa accompagnied by a decrease in volume by 9%. The highly directional nature of the d-type bonds at higher pressure (10GPa) could explain the unusally open nature of phase V.

About Condensed Matter lunchtime seminars

This is a weekly series of informal talks given primarily by members of the institute of condensed matter and complex systems, but is also open to members of other groups and external visitors. The aim of the series is to promote discussion and learning of various topics at a level suitable to the broad background of the group. Everyone is welcome to attend..
