Condensed Matter lunchtime seminar

To boldly grow..

Event details

Growth phenomena abound in many aspects of physics, examples including the nucleation of crystals, colloidal aggregation, bacterial growth and forest fires. I shall introduce some basic notions underlying growth processes before concentrating on self-affine (''fractal-esque'') surfaces and how this leads to the concept of universality.

I shall then review some scenarios where well-established universal behaviour breaks down. Using some of my own numerical results I shall attempt to present a coherent picture that addresses a number of puzzling observations and propositions drawn from the literature.

By virtue of necessity, the equation count will be approximately zero.

About Condensed Matter lunchtime seminars

This is a weekly series of informal talks given primarily by members of the institute of condensed matter and complex systems, but is also open to members of other groups and external visitors. The aim of the series is to promote discussion and learning of various topics at a level suitable to the broad background of the group. Everyone is welcome to attend..
