Binary fluids that undergo spinodal decomposition and are constantly cooled show intriguing oscillations in the specific heat. These oscillations were observed by Doris Vollmer here at Edinburgh and they inspired us to investigate the effects of the technologically important but badly neglected binary systems in a constantly changing temeprature. I will present results for binary alloys (model B) and binary fluids under gravity (modelH) which show a surprising number of different phenomena which can be classified using only three dimensionless numbers. We investigated these systems theoretically and numerically using the lattice Boltzmann method.
