Event details

Concentrated suspensions possess interesting rheological properties. For example, upon increasing the shear rate past some critical value, there can be a large jump (1-2 orders of magnitude) in the sample's shear stress/viscosity. Further, it appears that by similar mechanical forcing of the sample, it may be possible to jam it into a solid state. It has been speculated that such a 'jammed solid' may be a form of glass. In the talk, I will discuss a model in which the transition to the solid 'jammed' state is treated a stress-induced glass transition within the framework of (simplified) mode-coupling theory.

About Condensed Matter lunchtime seminars

This is a weekly series of informal talks given primarily by members of the institute of condensed matter and complex systems, but is also open to members of other groups and external visitors. The aim of the series is to promote discussion and learning of various topics at a level suitable to the broad background of the group. Everyone is welcome to attend..
