Screening phenomena in macroion suspensions

We will first define the notion of renormalized charge that is a key quantity in describing the effective interactions between highly charged macroions immersed in an electrolyte. We will discuss in some detail the case of the relevant parameters associated to DNA at physiological conditions. In a second part, we will consider the problem of the electrostatic interactions and phase behaviour for suspensions of anisotropic colloids. Two examples will be addressed 1) Laponite suspensions (disc-like highly charged platelets) and 2) recently obtained colloidal molecular crystal that exhibit intriguing long range orientational order.
