Event details

After contact with water, lipid lamellar phases can show spectacularinstabilities: multi-bilayer tubules, so-called myelins, grow from thelamellar/water interface into the water. I will try to summarize severalstudies which were performed in our group over the last few years andwhich aimed at a quantitative investigation of the growth of myelins aswell as changes in the lamellar phase using, among others, opticalmicroscopy, direct observation and time- and space-resolved small-anglex-ray scattering. These experiments provide detailed quantitativeinformation on the dynamics of myelin growth, the influx of water as wellas the swelling and textural changes of the lamellar phase. But do theseresults also fit together?

About Condensed Matter lunchtime seminars

This is a weekly series of informal talks given primarily by members of the institute of condensed matter and complex systems, but is also open to members of other groups and external visitors. The aim of the series is to promote discussion and learning of various topics at a level suitable to the broad background of the group. Everyone is welcome to attend..
