Event details

Although dry granular systems flow like ordinary fluids, they can be in different flow states when the external parameters are varied. In 2- dimensional channel flow of single layer of beads under gravity, a dilute-to- dense flow transition had been observed when the exit of the channel is reduced. If the exit is further reduced, the flow will be jammed. By examining the configurations of the beads in the jammed states, the jamming probability was estimated using a restrict random walk model. From the statistics of the flow before jamming, the nature of the dense-to-jammed flow can be inferred.

About Condensed Matter lunchtime seminars

This is a weekly series of informal talks given primarily by members of the institute of condensed matter and complex systems, but is also open to members of other groups and external visitors. The aim of the series is to promote discussion and learning of various topics at a level suitable to the broad background of the group. Everyone is welcome to attend..
