The Mechanics and Statistics of Active Matter

Event details

Active systems contain components which are capable of taking up energy from their surroundings and turning it into motion. Examples include molecular motors plus filaments plus ATP; cell-membranes laden with pumps or actin-polymerization sites, living cells in general, self-propelled organisms and, surprisingly, agitated monolayers of granular rods. I will summarise our recent and not-so-recent work on order, fluctuations and flow in collections of active particles, in suspension as well as confined to a substrate, through a coarse-grained hydrodynamic approach.

About Condensed Matter lunchtime seminars

This is a weekly series of informal talks given primarily by members of the institute of condensed matter and complex systems, but is also open to members of other groups and external visitors. The aim of the series is to promote discussion and learning of various topics at a level suitable to the broad background of the group. Everyone is welcome to attend..
