For multicomponent systems it is often hard to determine which phases will coexist. The principle is simple - it's the combination with lowest free energy - but the practicalities of finding which set of coexisting phases minimises the free energy is not.
This problem is encountered across soft condensed matter and high pressure physics, but was addressed first in the area of metallurgy. Many of the techniques used there are still being rediscovered in these other fields. This talk will cover the ways of extracting phase diagrams from interparticle interactions.
