One dimensional radial distribution functions obtained from experiment or simulation results are often used to describe the intermolecular structure of liquids. However, collapsing 3D structures onto one dimension leads to a loss of information which can sometimes cause difficulties in interpreting such distribution functions. Using examples from recent molecular dynamics simulation results for aqueous N-methylacetamide mixtures I will show that separating the one dimensional distribution into its angular components leads to clearer insights into the liquid structure.
