Event details

The lower alcohols have an anomalous negative excess entropy of mixing with water. The long held explanation for this is that the water in the hydration shells is in some way more structured than in the bulk. A very recent paper [1] offers an alternative explanation through a simple model using the observed molecular-level segregation. I will talk about the application of their analysis to my classical molecular dynamics simulations of methanol-water mixtures.

About Condensed Matter lunchtime seminars

This is a weekly series of informal talks given primarily by members of the institute of condensed matter and complex systems, but is also open to members of other groups and external visitors. The aim of the series is to promote discussion and learning of various topics at a level suitable to the broad background of the group. Everyone is welcome to attend..
