The lower alcohols have an anomalous negative excess entropy of mixing
with water. The long held explanation for this is that the water in
the hydration shells is in some way more structured than in the bulk.
A very recent paper [1] offers an alternative explanation through a
simple model using the observed molecular-level segregation. I will
talk about the application of their analysis to my classical molecular
dynamics simulations of methanol-water mixtures.
