At high enough concentrations, suspensions of microscopic particles in a liquid can form “colloidal glasses”. These are metastable amorphous solids in which the particles are trapped by their neighbours but still have some freedom for local Brownian motions. I will describe some experimental studies of colloidal glasses by dynamic light scattering (older work) and various rheological techniques (more recent). Emphasis will be on exploring the differences between glasses formed by particles with a purely repulsive interaction and those with an additional short-ranged attraction.
