Statistical Physics and Complexity Group meeting
Action-angle coordinates
- Event time: 11:30am
- Event date: 25th March 2015
- Speaker: Chay Paterson (Formerly School of Physics & Astronomy, University of Edinburgh)
- Location: Room 2511, James Clerk Maxwell Building (JCMB) James Clerk Maxwell Building Peter Guthrie Tait Road Edinburgh EH9 3FD GB
Event details
Completely integrable systems have as many conserved quantities as degrees of freedom, and with the right coordinates one can calculate frequencies of periodic motions -- without explicitly solving any equations of motion! In this talk, I'll introduce action-angle coordinates and solve some examples, including harmonic oscillators and the infinite potential well.
