Event details
During the summer of 2005 Ingrid Burt from Beeslack School used her Nuffield Bursary to undertake cosmic ray muon project, jointly supervised by Alan Walker of the PPE Group and Peter Reid of SCI- FUN. The project was to look at the feasibility of using a commercial muon lifetime kit from TeachSpin Inc. to undertake a classic experiment to show relativisitic time dilation effects in muon showers. The feasibilty study showed that the comparison of the rates of muon decays detected at the top of Cairn Gorm versus that at ground level at King's Buildings will differ by a factor of about 4 from that predicted without relativity. The experiment will be hosted by Cairngorm Mountain Limited at the top station of the Cairn Gorm mountain railway from October 15 to October 24/25. It is hoped to have preliminary results available, which is very appropriate given that 2005 has been designated in the UK as "The Einstein Year of Physics" by the Institute of Physics.
Further details are contained in the poster on the Level 4 corridor.
