The branching random walk is a model that is easy to define and is closely related to a number of more complex problems such as spin glasses, directed polymer in a random medium, Fisher-KPP and branching Brownian motion. In this talk I will give a simple numerical method for obtaining thermodynamic properties of the branching random walk and discuss how it relates to the problems mentioned above. If time I will also sketch how to obtain an analytic solution in the thermodynamic limit by mapping to a generalised random energy model.
