An Introduction to Nematic Liquid Crystals
Statistical Physics and Complexity Group meeting
An Introduction to Nematic Liquid Crystals
- Event time: 11:30am until 12:30pm
- Event date: 4th October 2017
- Speaker: Dr Aidan Brown (School of Physics & Astronomy, University of Edinburgh)
- Location: Room 2511, James Clerk Maxwell Building (JCMB) James Clerk Maxwell Building Peter Guthrie Tait Road Edinburgh EH9 3FD GB
Event details
Liquid crystals are an important class of Soft Matter systems, occupying the
region between liquids and solids. They are not just 'squishy solids' or
'hard liquids' but display several unique properties not displayed by either
of the conventional phases. I will introduce some of these properties, using
nematic liquid crystals as an example. In particular, I'll discuss the
nematic order parameter, liquid crystal elasticity, and the formation and
nature of defects.
