Event details

Liquid crystals are an important class of Soft Matter systems, occupying the
region between liquids and solids. They are not just 'squishy solids' or
'hard liquids' but display several unique properties not displayed by either
of the conventional phases. I will introduce some of these properties, using
nematic liquid crystals as an example. In particular, I'll discuss the
nematic order parameter, liquid crystal elasticity, and the formation and
nature of defects.
