Event details

Undertake fun physics and astronomy activities during Doors Open Day 2023.

Where physics meets biology

Understand how physics and biology work together to address some crucial health-related issues.  As part of this you can build a giant LEGO and use virtual reality headsets to discover our work in ‘biophysics’.

Location: Nucleus Building, King’s Building campus, Edinburgh, EH9 3FD

Date: Saturday 23 September 2023 ONLY

Time: 10am – 4pm

The sound of silence…AND NOISY ECHOS!

Visit the most silent place you will have ever experienced – the ‘anechoic chamber’, where the sound does not bounce back. In contrast, you can then visit the noisy ‘reverberation room’ which is designed to have as much echo as possible. These two very unusual acoustics rooms have been used to study the sound radiated by brass instruments and the absorption of sound by moss-covered paving.

Location: James Clerk Maxwell Building, King’s Building campus, Edinburgh, EH9 3FD

Date: Saturday 23 September 2023 ONLY

Time: 10am – 4pm

Fusion exhibition

A collaboration between researchers in the School of Physics and Astronomy and three final-year students at the Edinburgh College of Art, this is a gallery of new works investigating the science, people and passions behind current research and teaching activities.

Location: Nucleus Building, King’s Building campus, Edinburgh, EH9 3FD

Date: Saturday 23 September 2023 ONLY

Time: 10am – 4pm

Stellar stuff!

A chance to discover the ‘out of this world’ from organisations based at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh. Activities include speaking to astronomers and engineers, crafts, handling meteorites, telescope dome tours and hearing from start-up companies.

Location: Royal Observatory Edinburgh, Blackford Hill, Edinburgh, EH9 3HJ

Date: Saturday 23 & Sunday 24 September 2023

Times: 10am to 5pm with last entry to the site at 4pm. Some areas, including tours, will close earlier than this.

Further information: It is recommend that you reserve an arrival slot for free to help manage the flow of visitors but this does not guarantee you access to every individual area and it does not guarantee access to a telescope dome tour:
