Research projects available in the School
A list of potential PhD projects can be found under each of the following research areas. Our projects are advertised in the autumn, with a deadline the following January (for 2026 the Astronomy deadline is 5th January, 2026 and for Particle Physics, Nuclear Physics and Condensed Matter applications the deadline is 16th January, 2026).
When submitting an application, we do not require a research proposal document to be attached. Instead, please tell us about your research interests in the 'research proposal' text field. You should include at least one of the following key phrases to ensure that your application is seen by the relevant selection panel(s) for your research area:
- Astronomy & Astrophysics
- Particle Physics Experiment
- Particle Physics Theory
- Nuclear Physics
- Computational Materials Science, Extreme Conditions Physics, or Quantum Ordering
- Soft Matter Physics, Statistical Physics and Complexity, Physics of Living Matter, or Astrobiology
