General interest seminar

Biological structures obtained by electron cryomicroscopy: Adventures of a physicist in biology.

  • Event time: 5:00pm
  • Event date: 20th September 2018
  • Speaker: Richard Henderson (Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge)
  • Location: Swann Lecture Theatre, Michael Swann Building

Event details

Richard went to school in Edinburgh and received his degree in Physics from Edinburgh in 1966. On the advice of Professor Bill Cochrane (founder of the Condensed Matter Physics Group now the ICMCS in Edinburgh) he moved to the Laboratory for Molecular Biology for his PhD studies in X-ray crystallography. After postdocing at Yale University he returned to the LMB and made a change of technique into electron microscopy pursuing the developments in techniques which eventually led to the award of the Nobel prize.

Richard is thus one of our most distinguished alumni and his talk will explore some of the less obvious ways a degree in physics can take you.

The lecture will be held at 17.00 on the 20th Sept in the Swann Main Lecture Theatre, Swann Building Tea and Cake from 16.30
