  • Event date: 13th March 2025

Event details

All students and staff welcome.

Speaker

Prof Graeme Ackland, professor of computer simulation, School of Physics and Astronomy.

Abstract

This presentation is given on behalf of the College of Science and Engineering to raise awareness of what constitutes responsible research, covering the current ethics and integrity policy and procedures, and will discuss the increasingly complex landscape of expectations from funders and other stakeholders.

Prof Ackland will lead discussions of the types of risk which might arise within research and the reasonable steps to mitigate these risks.  Are there any “red lines” of unacceptable risks, where the potential benefits that may be derived from the research do not justify those risks?  Who is responsible for determining these, in principle and in practice?

College also hopes to counter the perception that only research directly involving human participants needs to be subject to ethical review. Researchers should self-assess all proposed research to determine whether ethical scrutiny by an independent ethics panel is needed.

Refreshments

Meet at 16.30 in the Nucleus Building foyer for tea and cakes prior to the talk.
