Event details

I will talk about the new muon g-2 experiment at Fermilab, E989, which has just finished the first year of physics data taking with the aim of measuring the magnetic dipole moment of the muon to a precision of 140ppb, a factor of 4 better than the previous experiment conducted at Brookhaven (E821). The previous measurement, at 540ppb accuracy, was discrepant from the Standard Model prediction at the level of about 3.5 sigma. I will discuss the history of the measurement, the improvements which will allow for the reduction in the uncertainties on the measurement, the work ongoing to increase the accuracy of the theoretical prediction and the current status of data taking including some of the first preliminary analysis of the data.
