Decolonisation across the disciplines – and other thoughts on the decolonisation imperative

  • Event time: All day

  • Speaker: Dr Sean Muller (Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study (JIAS))

Event details

There has been a marked increase in interest in the decolonisation of academic disciplines in the last decade and particularly in the last five years following the highlighting of these issues by South African student movements. What appears to have been relatively neglected in these literatures is the question of how the imperative of decolonisation might, and should, vary across different academic disciplines and topics. In my current work I propose an approach to answering that question, which provides additional structure to our understanding of decoloniality and the direction taken by decolonisation initiatives. In the seminar I will sketch this approach and provide some additional thoughts about the decolonisation imperative in academic institutions.
