Confinement vs Chiral Symmetry Breaking – a holographic story

Event details

Holography has provided a new understanding of chiral symmetry breaking in strongly coupled gauge theories. I distill the main ingredients and recast them to form a sensible model of QCD and its light bound states. Recently there has been interest on the lattice and for composite higgs models in gauge theories with two different representations of matter. Holographic models of these theories can quickly provide more information on the effects of changing the number of quarks that are currently beyond the lattice. These models show small mass splittings between the mesons of the two fermion sectors - we speculate on how large these gaps could become in the full space of gauge theories. If realized these large gaps would totally seaparte chiral symmetry breaking from confinement (which occurs at or below the lowest  mass gap scale).

About Particle Physics Theory seminars

The Particle Physics Theory seminar is a weekly series of talks reflecting the diverse interests of the group. Topics include analytic and numerical calculations based on the Standard Model of elementary particle physics, theories exploring new physics, as well as more formal developments in gauge theories and gravity..
