Event details

"Decolonisation",  especially in the context of "Decolonising the Curriculum", has been a hot - and sometimes controversial - topic worldwide since it came to widespread attention after the Rhodes Must Fall protest movement began in Cape-Town, and spurred other action against colonial symbolism and legacies in Universities worldwide.

However, "decolonisation" is an inherently complex topic, and it is not necessarily obvious to practitioners in disciplines such as STEM how it applies to their work; or, indeed, how it applies in different countries!

Starting from the implicit context - colonisation, past and present - I will present some models for how we can apply "decolonisation" to Physics in Scotland - both in the curriculum, and perhaps in the practice itself - and raise some of the philosophical conflicts we need to address in this process."
