Title: Controlling Topological Spin Textures in 2D van der Waals Magnet

Abstract: Magnetic skyrmions are nanoscale, particle-like topological defects that are candidates for information bits ('1's and '0's) in next-generation memory. For this to be viable, we must be able to reliably write and erase them. This seminar explores the physics of this switching process in the 2D magnet Fe3GeTe2 using micromagnetic simulations. We demonstrate how an external magnetic field can drive the system through a complete reversal, controllably annihilating a dense skyrmion state into a uniform magnetic state. This process, governed by a competition between the applied field and the intrinsic energies that stabilize the skyrmion, is the fundamental mechanism for writing and erasing information with topological spin defects, a crucial step for their use in future spintronic devices.

About Condensed Matter lunchtime seminars

This is a weekly series of informal talks given primarily by members of the institute of condensed matter and complex systems, but is also open to members of other groups and external visitors. The aim of the series is to promote discussion and learning of various topics at a level suitable to the broad background of the group. Everyone is welcome to attend..
