Title: Cerebrospinal fluid flow around the brain
Abstract: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is a water-like fluid that bathes the brain and spinal cord and oscillates in response to the periodic changes in brain volume that occur during the cardiac cycle. Understanding this motion is essential for clarifying its contribution to solute transport, waste clearance, and drug delivery. In this work, we use mathematical modelling to study the oscillatory flow of CSF in the cranial subarachnoid space that surrounds the brain. We assume that the flow is driven by displacements of the brain surface, which we extract from DENSE MRI data. We find that there is a steady flow generated by the oscillations and investigate with a simple two-dimensional model how it contributes to the transport of solutes.

About Condensed Matter seminars
This is a weekly series of informal talks given primarily by members of the institute of condensed matter and complex systems, but is also open to members of other groups and external visitors. The aim of the series is to promote discussion and learning of various topics at a level suitable to the broad background of the group. Everyone is welcome to attend..
