ICMCS Seminar - Can the spin textures affect mechanical behaviour in 2D Magnets?

Event details

The coupling between the spin degrees of freedom and macroscopic mechanical motions, including striction, shearing, and rotation, has attracted wide interest with applications in actuation, transduction, and information processing. The relationships between spin textures and magnetic fields, currents, and optical stimuli have already been explored in recent 2D materials literature. Experiments so far have studied the mechanical response to spin-texture motion using nanoelectromechanical resonators but lack a theoretical description of the mechanisms at the nano- length scale. In this talk, I will attempt to study spin-mechanical coupling using atomistic and micromagnetic simulations of 2D magnets. First, I will discuss the atomistic spin model results of few-layered MnPS3 and how spin textures can create spin waves that affect mechanical dynamics. Next, I will briefly describe magneto-elastic coupling in micromagnetic simulations of Fe3GaTe2. I will address differences in the mechanical response and properties of the system due to spin texture type and how they can be correlated to experimental results. Finally, I will conclude with the future scope of the work and how spin-mechanical coupling can be used as a strong alternative to current- and laser-based stimuli for spin control in 2D magnets.

About Condensed Matter seminars

This is a weekly series of informal talks given primarily by members of the institute of condensed matter and complex systems, but is also open to members of other groups and external visitors. The aim of the series is to promote discussion and learning of various topics at a level suitable to the broad background of the group. Everyone is welcome to attend..
