Professor Jason Crain is Professor of Applied Physics at the University of Edinburgh. His background is in condensed matter physics and disordered and exotic materials studied using experimental and computational techniques. He has made major contributions in elucidating structure property relationships in complex systems including lower alcohols, amino acids, minimal peptides and biomimetic systems.
He is currently on part-time secondment asHead of Physical Sciences at the UK’s National Physical Laboratory in London. In this role, he is responsible for the National Laboratory’s strategic science direction and its interaction with government, Technology Strategy Board, DIUS, The Royal Society and UK science policy makers. He is also Visiting Professor at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in New York since 2002.
He was founding Director of the COSMIC Research Center at the University of Edinburgh, Fellow of the Institute of Physics(IOP), member of the steering committees of the IOP Liquids Group and the Scottish Bioinformatics Forum and former Royal Society of Edinburgh Research Fellow.
He has extensive experience and high visibility in leading large collaborative research programs at the physical/life science interface in both academic and industrial sectors involving experiment and simulation. He has authored over 120 publications including seminal papers on the molecular structure of liquid mixtures and holds 5 patents.
