ATLAS

ATLAS is a general-purpose particle physics experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. ATLAS is designed to exploit the full discovery potential of the LHC, pushing the frontiers of scientific knowledge. ATLAS' exploration uses precision measurement to push the frontiers of knowledge by seeking answers to fundamental questions such as: What are the basic building blocks of matter? What are the fundamental forces of nature? What is dark matter made of?

The ATLAS Edinburgh group worked on the Higgs boson announced in July 2012. The Higgs boson particle is named afterPeter Higgs, Emeritus Professor at the University of Edinburgh. Peter Higgs and François Englert were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics on 8th October 2013, “for the theoretical discovery of a mechanism that contributes to our understanding of the origin of mass of subatomic particles”.  Ten years after the discovery of the Higgs boson in July 2022, we celebrated with a public event at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.

We continue to work on Higgs physics, making precision measurements of Higgs boson properties, as well as searching for new phenomena, including long-lived particles, heavy neutral leptons and dark photons.
