The Fisher KPP equation provides a simple description of  population growth with a maximum capacity and diffusion. It exhibits travelling front solutions where a region with the maximum  population invades an unpopulated region. In this talk I will  give a gentle introduction to the equation and this type of travelling front solution. We'll see how there emerges a `selection principle' whereby the speed of the front takes on a particular value dependent on the initial conditions.
