Talks from the new PhD students, outlining their current projects now nearly a year down the line.
This week talks will be from Francesco Cagnetta and James Hitchen.
Francesco Cagnetta
The fluctuations of a cell membrane result from the interplay between the actin cytoskeleton and related proteins. Based on the biological mechanisms behind this interaction, we developed a stochastic celluar automaton mimicking a fluctuating interfaces driven by activators sliding onto it. Direct numerical simulations and a theoretical, coarse-grained description of the model reveal the onset of kinetic waves, Microphase separation of the activators and the anomalous scaling of the interface roughening.

I will be giving a short talk on the work undertaken by myself and Alexander in developing a recipe for generating low dimensional models of the transition to turbulence in shear flows. Papers of interest are 'On the self sustaining process in shear flows' (Waleffe 1997) and 'A low-dimensional model for turbulent shear flows' (Moehlis et. al. 2004), though the talk will be fairly introductory anyway.
