The legal aspects of starting a business
Andy is a Corporate Law Partner in the Edinburgh office of Addleshaw Goddard, a premium international business law firm. He is a leading member of the firm's corporate finance and M&A teams, regularly advising on start-ups and spin-outs, fundraisings, mergers, acquisitions and disposals.
Andy is also a founding member of venture capital investor Par Equity which Andy helped to establish in 2008 and which has to date made over 47 investments with over £100m of capital under management.
In this masterclass, Andy will cover all the legal aspects of "building a hypothetical business", including:
- corporate structure
- funding, including the basics of debt and equity and the concept of solvency
- accounts, including key balance sheet items (with a particular focus on IP, given the audience) and when you might need a business plan
- employees, consultants and contractors
- and, if time allows, contracts
Entrepreneurship Masterclasses will take place the first Monday of every month. We have some inspirational speakers lined up including Physicists who have commercialised their research, either applying their know how to industry or starting a business, as well as speakers from the Entrepreneurial community who will be sharing how to develop an entrepreneurial mind-set and the importance of networking with the wider community. All staff and postgraduate students are welcome. Cakes and biscuits will be provided - bring your own coffee. Photos may be take at these events and used for publicity purposes. If you do not wish to be photographed, or for your photo to be used for publicity purposes, please inform Caroline Keir (firstname.lastname@example.org). .
